Death

Endings · transformation · rebirth

Upright Meaning

Death almost never means literal death — it means a total ending and transformation. Something old must close so the new has room to arrive. Let endings end, cleanly.

Symbolism

Death rides a white horse past king, child and bishop alike, the sun rising between two towers on the horizon. Almost never literal death — a total ending so the new has room to enter.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, Death is resisting a necessary ending — clinging to a person, job or identity you should have released, and staying stuck in an in-between ache. Ask what you are afraid to lose; often the thing you grip is the thing holding you back.

Death in Love

The deep transformation or ending of a relationship — perhaps a parting, perhaps the old version of it dying so a new one can live. It hurts, but the ache of blocking the change lasts longer.

Death in Career & Money

A thorough transformation, a departure, or the end of a project that no longer fits. Rarely a tweak — a page turn.

When Death Appears

Shows up when you know deep down "this can't go on," but can't yet let it end.

Major Arcana

No. 13 · XIII

Death is one of the 22 Major Arcana — the cards of life's big themes and turning points.

In a Word

“Let endings end. Only then can the new arrive.”
